Rather than an aggressive all-or-nothing wipe, our workstation divides punctuation marks into 6 distinct categories: Terminal Marks (. ? ! … ¿ ¡), Pauses & Separators (, ; :), Quotes & Apostrophes (" ' “ ” ‘ ’ ` « »), Brackets & Parentheses (( ) [ ] { } < >), Dashes & Hyphens (- – — _), and Math & Special Symbols (+ * / \ = @ # $ % ^ & | ~). You can enable or disable any combination to preserve contractions, keep math formulas, or leave sentence-ending periods intact.
Contractions contain apostrophes. If you have the 'Quotes & Apostrophes' category enabled, apostrophes are stripped, converting "don't" to "dont" and "it's" to "its" (standard for NLP tokenization and bag-of-words models). If you wish to preserve apostrophes in contractions, simply uncheck the 'Quotes & Apostrophes' toggle.
The punctuation stripping engine is strictly Unicode-aware. Accented characters in French, Spanish, and German (such as é, à, ñ, ü, ß), Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Japanese Kanji/Kana, Chinese Hanzi, and multi-byte emojis are 100% preserved. Only actual punctuation and typographical glyphs belonging to selected categories are removed.
